The summer like no other

It is a summer like no other.

Nature is at its peak.

Day after day the sun shines with short bouts of cooling rain.

Birds of every hue sing in the trees.

Hydrangea blossoms burst out of cottage gardens.

Sea and sky mirror each other, painted by the Artist's hand in brilliant shades of blue.

Yet a hush has fallen over this seaside village.

In summer's past, the sounds of summer by the sea reverberated throughout this jetty of three tiny streets.

Today, the sound of surf rushing over rocks is deafening because the inhabitants of this place are mute.

Tucked inside their cottages, they mostly seek sanctuary from the pestilence that has gripped even this obscure part of our world.

Down the hill at the town beach, bathers are social distancing six feet apart on this sweltering summer's day.

It is the summer of living separately.

Seaside walkabout

Come to the seashore and walk with me.
Hide from the world awhile among the beach roses.
Stand atop these standing stones and watch the surf slide in.
Sit in sand by the water's edge and listen.
Explore the ocean floor laid bare.
Walk into the waves and wade.
Feel the caress of God's great blue Heaven above.

Heaven on earth

"Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads," reads one of my favorite Easter verses. Consequently, my head is always in the clouds. I am fascinated by the ever-changing vista above.

Dark swirling clouds shroud the sun.
Puffy clouds glide past.
Single seagull circles on a cloudless day.
Reach up and touch the sky.
Beyond the blue.
Heaven on earth.

Summer house beckons in springtime

Awaiting the start of the season, we wander around the summer house, glimpsing the natural world around us.

Signs of the Creator's handiwork are everywhere: in the brilliant yellow petals of daffodils, the drumming of a woodpecker's bill boring into a tree, and the contented munching of a pair of horses dining on nature's bounty.

While we soon will awaken the summer house from its long winter's nap, we count the days until we fling open the windows, mow the lawn and roll the barbecue grill out of the shed.

Meanwhile, we sit on the picnic table and dream of sunny days, soft breezes and the soothing sounds of the sea...

A welcoming sight -- daffodils bloom along the
stone wall, while clay pots wait to be filled.
A male downy woodpecker clings to the trunk of our tree,
while he digs a nest hole with his long pointed bill.

Our quintessential New England seaside town with
its stone walls, farmland and sea beyond.

Horses graze in a pasture dotted with yellow wildflowers.

Melted snow and abundant spring rains created wetlands, where trees
stand tall, partly submerged in the middle of a pond.
